Aviation Photos
Aviation Photography is a passion. I truly enjoy spending time at an airport watching planes as they come and go, seeing how well a pilot is doing in tricky cross-wind, looking for interesting lighting, or just taking hopefuly interesting photographs.

Being a pilot and a photographer allows me to combine two of my lifelong interests into a single activity. The time invested in taking a picture may be as little as a couple of seconds while at a location for some reason, or, as I have done on more than one occasion, many hours or even several days waiting for just the right moment to capture lighting and aircraft in a way that is satisfying.

Several of the images on this page (the colorful vertical ones a bit farther down the page) were updated in October 2008, and are shots I took for a magazine cover. The images below were not selected, and so, here they are for you to enjoy. (Someday I will put the magazine cover in this collection). The images at the top of the page are of the Super-Moon we had this past winter with a jet and a Dash-8 flying in front of it. As can be seen by the few shots that follow, I have been looking to take these types of image for several years, but, with the weather we get in the pacific northwest, it is difficult to get a nice full moon and no clouds and winds which line planes up for landing between the airport and the moon, and having the time to be in the right place at the right time. It is frustratingly amazing how many close calls their are with regards to the plane passing right in front of the moon. And considering that most of these were shot with a 400mm f/2.8 Nikkor, its not a simple matter to just pick-up the camera and go. Including the tripod to support this heavy lens, the total weight is around 30 pounds.

The snow-birds were shot at the Abbotsford Airshow, as was the Stinson doing its crop dusting impression.

Most of the other photos on this page were taken in Japan where I lived from 2005 to 2007.

I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Sincerely,
Matthew Lang
